Of Gardenia
I’m sure a lot of people know the meaning of gardenia. But do they? Do you?
As someone who does does gardening in her spare time, gardenias are my least favorite. True, the flowers are beautiful, but you might never know that it’s more than just challenging to grow gardenias. True, the scent is wonderful, but you might never know that it’s taking more than just your regular effort to take care of gardenias.
Outdoor gardeners give a nickname for gardenias: suicidal gardenias.
They are a demanding plant.
Before you start, you need to check that your soil is well-drained and acidic, possessing a pH about 5. The place must be light-shaded and sometimes you have to let the sunshine in.
Then you start. You need to have space between plants, dig carefully, and plant with care. You need to apply compost if needed, or to deacidize if the soil is too acidic. You need to check for whiteflies and bugs, make sure that your plant get about an inch of water per week, make sure that no water is accumulated at the bottom of the pot, shape the bush and protect it from cold wind, and maintain a constant soil temperature. You need to cut deadhead to encourage flowering. Sometimes you also need to do pruning and apply mulch. In short, gardenias only thrive in perfect environment, protection, and attention.
You are the person who cares for, is patient of, perseveres in your duty, and tends to them the most. And for all your care, patience, perseverance, and tenderness, they bloom for you.
